Top notes

Some fragrances just smell good, pure and simple. And yet other fragrances contain worlds within a spray. Maybe less simple, more likely to polarise, and yet incredibly satisfying when you find one that you like. Altamura by L’Entropiste is in the latter camp.

When you first spray Altamura, you don’t just get a fleeting flash of citrus. Here, instead, you get a glorious, high-voltage explosion of zesty orange and boozy tones. It has an incredible, almost dreamy texture that sits somewhere between a perfectly mixed, bitter-sweet Negroni and a high-end glass of some sort of orange-flavoured, spiced cognac. There is an immediate punch of fruit here that wakes up the senses instantly. It’s tangy and a little sharp, but underscored by a rich, jammy undertone of dried, preserved orange that keeps it from feeling like a standard, fleeting citrus cologne. Instead, it feels deeply textured and immediately gives us the idea that something much darker is waiting in the wings.

Heart notes

As the cheery opening begins to settle, Altamura pulls off a brilliant theatrical pivot. The zestiness of the citrus doesn’t disappear, instead it grows thicker and more syrupy, hinting at an amber liquor sipped from a crystal glass by a roaring fireplace. A deep, heavy, thrumming wave of rum and frankincense crest, taking up a lot of space in the composition and enhancing this idea of richness, of specialness, of exclusivity. This isn’t a clean, sterile incense either; it’s a dusty, ancient, and highly atmospheric smoke that balances beautifully with the lingering sweetness of the fruit.

Throughout its lifespan, Altamura weaves these pictures of not exactly tawdry excess, but a contained sort of opulence, and not exactly decadence, but a sense specialness, quality, depth. The fragrance is complex, beautifully nuanced, and utterly addictive. It wears differently in summer as in winter, but each season allows new facets to catch the light, revealing them in beautiful, glittering display.

Base notes

In the final bars of a wear, Altamura settles into a warm, deeply resinous hum. The smoky edges soften as the slightest hints of a forest-floor greenness start to emerge from the balsamic fir and pine. I don’t get a lot of this, personally, but enough that it feels detectable. Almost like a memory – perhaps a memory from the orange of the grove in which it grew.

At times, the scent also feels like the charred residue of a slice of orange peel, sizzling away in the embers of a fireplace. The amber gives the scent a smooth, golden hue that clings to the skin, feeling like a heavy, luxurious wool coat that has battled years of harsh winters remaining reassuringly heavy and cosy. Altamura is a masterclass in tension. Around the edges it is bold, unpolished, a little wild, but at its heart there is harmony, comfort, even generosity.

The other stuff

Altamura is a powerful scent, but in no way could this be described as obnoxious. If, like me, you favour underspraying, then a couple of sprays will see you through a full day, but you could also go heavier than that without overpowering people near you. The sillage leaves a spectacular, smoky-sweet trail in the air. Because of that heavy incense and boozy resinous baseline, this is a scent I would recommend primarily for autumn and winter. I also think that it leans more towards evening wear and would be ideal for an intimate evening out, an event, or a walk through autumn leaves.

Altamura's box and packaging

The bottle from L’Entropiste are gloriously, deliberately at an interesting angle. Beautiful in their, well, chaos, the bottles sit within a fully recyclable paper box and are housed in very little, or no plastic or cellophane.

The brand

L’Entropiste is a niche house led by the legendary perfumer Bertrand Duchaufour. The entire ethos of the brand is centered around the concept of entropy. Chaos, disorder, and dissonance are taken by the perfumer and turned into wearable art. As a result, many of the fragrances have unexpected notes pairings, or something out of the ordinary in their composition.
